What is Science? Science is comprised of 3 branches at school level - Basic Science, Biology and Chemistry. Basic Science We seek to help pupils understand that Science is a subject which is always evolving as new ideas and theories are developed and tested, and that facts cannot simply be learned from a book. We hope that they will develop an enthusiasm for, and wider interest in, the sciences beyond the taught curriculum. At the conclusion of their two year Basic Science course which includes Biology, Chemistry and Physics, we ensure that pupils have both a developing curiosity in Science and increased confidence in the use of the scientific method, putting them in good stead for making a career choice in science. Biology Our aim is to prepare independent thinkers who can comprehend, and perhaps contribute to the future of, the fast-developing body of knowledge and understanding that constitutes modern Biology. We teach them the curriculum in depth, always insisting on excellence in their work, and provide an environment in which they can feel confident to question the science presented to them. As a department we are passionate about what we do. We believe everyone has an interest in living organisms and the natural world around them, whether it be a fascination with how the human body works or a desire to know the true impact of man's activities on the biodiversity of our planet. Our aim is to share this passion through our teaching, enthusing and engaging students about the complexity and variety of life and the importance of interdependence. Chemistry Chemistry is a physical science, and it is the study of the properties of and interactions between matter and energy. In other words, chemistry is a way to study the properties, characteristics, and physical and chemical changes of matter. The study of Chemistry is both fascinating and intellectually demanding. It involves learning through collaborative discovery: pupils are encouraged to engage in discussion and to ask questions pertinent to the objectives of the lesson. Our aim is that all students should acquire a good understanding of the fundamentals of Chemistry. |
