Bula Vinaka and Warm Greetings from the Consumer Council of Fiji!
The Pacific Small Islands Developing States (PSIDS) are highly vulnerable to natural hazards. In the Oceania Region, countries like Fiji are particularly vulnerable as they encounter one major cyclone every 2 – 3 years. The threat of tsunami generated by under-water earthquakes or tectonic movement is a huge threat for many low-lying islands. The cyclical nature of the El Nino/La Nina phenomenon also pose great risks by bring abnormally longer drier periods of lack of rainfall or high rainfall triggering flooding and loss of crops. Despite the vulnerabilities, the PSIDS have limited capacity to effectively manage the risks and overcome the significant economic losses after a disaster.
Therefore, in order to build resilience of Fijians towards natural perils such as cyclones, the United Nations Capital Development Fund under the Pacific Insurance Climate Adaptation Programme has launched new parametric insurance products. Their insurance products provides liquidity to Fijians in the immediate after math of cyclones.
In order to create awareness on the product, the Consumer Council of Fiji would like to share a short informative video. If you are interested in sharing this video with your teachers and/or students, please let us know and we will send you a copy.
